Are you interested in the revitalisation of a major public space in the heart of Kew?
The City of Boroondara (Council) is seeking feedback on draft concept plans for improvements to Athenaeum Place in Kew – the brick lane that connects Brougham and Walpole streets. The vision for this project is to create a vibrant and attractive laneway for people to walk, pause and meet in the heart of Kew Junction Shopping Centre.
The aim is to:
- enhance the amenity of Kew Junction Shopping Centre through the creation of a contemporary, quality and vibrant public space
- create a public space that supports daily use – walking, seating, meeting and dining
- support local trade by attracting foot traffic and encouraging shoppers to stay longer in the centre
- celebrate the rich history of the former Athenaeum Hall (which Athenaeum Place was named after).
Improvements are proposed to include: new furniture, paving, lighting, way-finding and heritage interpretation signage, retention of all trees, increased planting, a screened enclosure for traders’ bins and an enhanced plaza at the Walpole Street entry.
Feedback received will be used to guide further design development. The improvement works are scheduled to be implemented in the 2017/18 financial year and will be subject to funding availability and the outcomes of the consultation.
